Many of my on-line friends have read the series developed by a stay-at-home mom. She used images from a dream or dreams that she'd had. She hadn't read any vampire books or seen any vampire movies ( her words from an interview ). My 13 and a half year old grandaughter has read the 4 book series and has been so anxious to see this movie. I know some of the gals have had their tickets purchased in advance for weeks. And these are adult women.. Now, statistically, vampire movies are more popular with males. It must be the violence and domination aspect. I completed Twilight/1st book of the series on Wednesday night. Mike picked up book #2 for me to read when I get back. I found the book to be engaging, a bit suggestive for young teens but basically, a fast read that leaves you hanging. Soooooo, you have to continue to the next book to keep up with the characters. A smart move by author Stephenie Meyer.
As I was nuturing my need for caffeine somewhere midway between Rome and COS, I saw the Thursday edition of USA Today. I have not seen this movie. The following is a synopsis of the reviewer from the USA Today entertainment section. This in no way reflects my viewpoint. I will reserve judgement until Twilight comes to STARZ or HBO.
" Despite questionable casting, wooden acting, laughable dialogue and truely awful make-up, nothing will stop teen girls from flocking to see this kitschy adaptation of the popular novel by Mormon housewife, Stephenie Meyer."
' The director relies heavily on extreme close-ups to make up for the lead actor's lack of emotional range. His English accent comes through at inopportune times. The two leads lack chemistry. Bella has two expressions---blank and slightly less blank.'
This movie cost $37 million dollars to make and must gross $150 million to justify making #2 and #3--New Moon and Eclipse. New Moon is predicted to cost $75 million due to location ( Italy ), special effects ( werewolves ) and many stunts ( motorcyles ).
Reviewer's statement-"This novel is substantially more absorbing than this intentionally funny and quickly forgettable film."
This reader ( me ) has to wonder if Stephenie Meyer is as disappointed by her screen writer - Melissa Rosenberg - as Stephen King was with the screen writer for one of my favorites, The Shining. It appears that Melissa Rosenberg is already working on her adaptation of New Moon.
BTW- I loved the original version of the Shining and I thought the television adaptation was okay. The original really grabbed me. I loved to be scared. And the most recent vampire movie I watched was 'blood and chocolates', which was a foreign film ( that's gotta be why they used all lower case letters in the title ). It was a love story also, with the exception that the female lead was the werewolf/vampire. It was set in modern day Europe and gave us the understanding that these creatures have existed for centuries and continue to exist today. I liked it but I wasn't totally 'Wowed'. And I really like the HBO series-True Blood. I like it when the vampires are HOT and discerning and compassionate, don't you?
I hope someone lets me know their impression of the new movie Twilight. I don't usually go with the reviewers impressions. After all, they are always cancelling tv shows that I like and panning movies I love!

I haven't read the books yet, but I hear about them everywhere. I think I'll pick the first one up. The male lead in the movie is from here and then moved to LA when he was 7 I guess, at least that's what the radio says. It's definitely getting a lot of hype.
I LOVE BOOKS and I have read the series. IT was so not something I would have picked to read but MY MORMON FRIENDS in my Book Club wanted to spend the summer reading this series before the movie came out. The assured me that it was not INTERVIEW with A VAMPIRE and it was NOT gory and it would be fast reading. IT was all that and MORE...LOVED the series. SO SO different than anything I would have read. OK so since then I have went out on the limb and found that Vampire Books for young adults are quite the rage right now. I read two others...I have a small book blog http://mommasong1.blogspot.com that I talk a little about the books I read. I have a Vampire Book right now called the Historian...I keep looking at it and not started it yet because it's reviews are sort of like Interview with Vampire stuff.
OK this was long...yes I liked the series and I agree that I am not sure it is appropiate for some TWEENS but I guess for TEENS and young adults it is fine the first BOOK.
I will tell you that in the Last BOOK I am NOT sure TWEENS should be reading some it. HMMMM I do not want to give much away since you have not read it....I will wait for you to finish the series and YOU TELL ME WHAT you think of that LAST BOOK....
OK that is all for NOW....HOPE you are enjoying time with your family!
My kids both love the books and can't wait to see the movie- I may go with them just for fun. I have not read the books, so I have no idea what to expect. And I agree with you about the reviewers- their opinions very often do not reflect my own.
I can't wait for you to see it in a few years ;)
I LOVE YOU!!!!
When I was younger, I watched all the vampire movies, and read all the horror books, but no more. I finally decided I like to SLEEP at night, and not with the covers over my head. So, I'll leave that one to the rest of you.
I would like to say, though, that I loved the original Shining. Hubby and I saw it in an ancient old building (theater) in Big Spring, Texas, back in 1980. At a most crucial moment in the movie, we heard a HUMONGOUS clap of thunder, then the power went off. That theater was black as night inside! :-o We were practically sitting in each other's laps. It's funny to me now, but it scared the pee out of me (and hubby!) then! ;-Þ
Sure wish I could come up with a catchy idea for a novel like that! Can you imagine the prims I could buy? LOL
I was thinking about you today and wanted to say hello. Hope you are doing well.
Are you getting ready for the holidays? I've been doing some sewing and making presents for my mom and sister. Mom does most of the cooking because we are traveling all day to get there. But I do bring a few goodies along with me.
Thinking of you with fondness,
Lea
Goode Sunday Morning...
Thank you for stopping in to visit with me. Glad to see you. Hope you come over again.
Yes, these shows do get tiring at thymes, but I love them too much.
Hoping you well in all that you do.
Many Blessings 2 You on this November Day, Pamela
I have not read the books....thanks for sharing!!
Have a wonderful day!!
I must be living under a rock for the last (I don't know) months because today was the first I heard of the books or the movie. Maybe that is what happens when you have two kids three and under...LOL!
I along with Astrud, all of her friends and several of mine have read all 4 books, and I have to add that I have never read anything like this, never thought I would, and I also must add that that I too, along with all of the 15 year olds that I am always surrounded by am in love with Edward!! Ok I said it, I am guilty!!! And I love Bella too!!
Was the movie as good as the book? Not by a long shot, even parts of it was kind of cheesy, but will I buy our tickets for the other 3 movies 3 weeks in advance like I did this time??? YOU BET I WILL!!!
Love , K
