My man is nothing if not passionate about whatever he does. He is like a dog with a bone and won't let go. In the beginning( big deep voice saying, Let there be light!), Mike collected vinyl. He played clarinet in the band and listened faithfully to AM radio at night. He was taken, heart and soul, by music. His mother, Ruby, sang hymns and his sister, Linda, played piano. Mike can play Heart and Soul on the piano to this day. Early on in his 'bachelorhood', Mike collected vinyl. He had the single most eclectic collection I have ever seen. Then the arrival of transportable music--the 8 track. Ah, those really were the days. But vinyl could get scratched and 8 tracks soon wore out. On to a handier, more compact cassettte, hence the 'ette' which I believe is French for petite or smaller. Now we've all seen those strips of vinyl fluttering along the roadsides, so we all know they get twisted and pulled and broken. Today everything is on compact disc and going digital from there. Mike has had massive collections of all these forms, but due to the fact that they take up so much space and he has a wife that requires equal, if not more, space. These collections had to go and go they did. A couple years ago, we bought a CD clone so he could make copies of his cds for the car. Good idea, right? Seeing as how the cds can get scratched/damaged. Well now we have iPods. One that holds 20,000 songs and one that holds 40,000 songs. Mike has discovered the used cassette bin at Goodwill where cassettes are 38 cents each. He is transferring the cassettes onto rewritable discs that I can put into iTunes and then onto our iPods. Then he can simply donate the cassettes back to Goodwill. My iPod is full and his is close to the 30,000 mark, but he is able to find old music that is no longer available in any other form and put in on a source that is totally available to him and anyone else out there that can access our iTunes. Isn't that cool? And I don't have to watch near as many football/basketball games!
This a portion of Mike's CDs. He gets them from everywhere--garage sales, Goodwill, Weird Harolds, Stuff--and occasionally new from various stores. I make him glean through them once a year and take a box full down to Weird Harolds where he gets credit on future purchases. He rarely parts with something he pays new price for and I don't blame him but all the used ones are saved in 2 places so there is no need to keep them. These shelves hold about 1200 CDs and they are in alphabetical order. How else could you find what you are looking for? I love my hubby's hobby because it is something we can share and something he can share with family and friends. If they ask for a copy of something, he is always willing to spin one up. It is an economical hobby that benefits a lot of music-loving people. And best of all, he enjoys it!! So, while, there have been many changes in the way music is conveyed to the masses, my man has kept up and continues to bring music and his love for it out there for everybody.
Next time, see my post on the transformation of the video.......NOT!

Wow, he is really talented! I would love all of our albums and 45s put onto an ipod. Sometimes I do play them on an old console record player that I have. The old music is the best!
That is so awesome! I had no idea anyone was doing this...my hubby would love to see this post! Hugs! ♥
Wow! Now that's a collection!!! I would LOVE to come look through it. My father is a musician so I really appreciate music.
That's so cool that Mike is transferring the cassettes to disk and then to your ipod! What a great Idea!

You and DH are amazing Linda. What a great way to spend time and that collection is amazing. How does he remember if he has a certain tape when he is buying more? You both have such neat hobbies and also help others on the way. I admire you both :)
Hugs

Go Daddy O, go! Teasing! What a blessing to share his love of music with so many others! That's an amazing collection. Tell him, when Sweetie went out of state to pick up Beloved last month from college. He bought a big wooden drawer full of cassettes off a woman on a side of the road flea market for $2.00, too many to even count. Just last night I was giving him a hard time because that drawer is still lying in the middle of the carport under foot. I'm going to tell him, if he doesn't move them, I'm shipping them to your house. This will be enough to get him to squirrel them away for safe keeping! Thanks, Mike! Hugs, Linda! Oh, if he doesn't, then Mike still has first dibs on them!
Wow! that's quite a collection of CD's. My hubs collects DVD's and I have those in alphabetical order until he goes to get one to watch and never puts it back in order. I try to put them all back in order and he gets confused as to what he has just watched. He used to have a collection of VHS tapes and they were all color coded and listed in a book to find what you want to watch. He used to tape movies and some of the tapes had 2 or 3 movies on one tape. That was a chore to get organized. I like the DVD's better, they take up less space. I am an organizer with everything and I can't stand when something is not in its proper place. So that is my Hub's hobby, movies and hot rod cars. He is a wheeler dealer on cars and car parts. I guess a man needs a hobby just like us gals.
Keeps them out of trouble.

I love music, all kinds of music. Your hubba has a wonderful hobby and an impressive collection of songs.
Good for him! As long as it makes him happy.

This is so awesome, Linda, I love all kinds of music also. Sold all of my vinyl a few years ago as it took up too much room and wish I hadn't! Got rid of my cassettes too. The CD's get scratched way too easy. What a wonderful hobby ~*~Lisa
WOW!!!!! Now that's a collection... definitely more than 3, LOL! That's awesome that Mike has a hobby that he's so passionate about, just like you. And you can both shop at the same place, works out great!
Mike is a man after my own heart... I have a music collection that I can't even begin to organize. But instead of buying more records or CD's, I can spend hours on Amazon finding songs to download for my MP3 player. I don't even know how many songs I have saved on there!
I'd like to take a moment to thank you both for passing on your love for music!! I have always, always loved it (even though, no, I can't carry a tune in a wheelbarrow).
And, yes, I spent the money on cigarettes!!
Dilly DOXIES ...you werent kidding I think thats the biggest cd collection I have ever seen ! Im glad Mike has figured his contraption out and now can continue doing what he loves ! Hope you two are having a great week! hugs lilraggedyangie
Now THAT'S a collection! What an amazing hobby your husband has; it's so wonderful that you both can enjoy it together.

WoW!!! What a collection. I swore I would only marry a man that had a passion for something and for life. I have always been thankful for that. It looks like your DH has a passion too. How fun to be able to share that part of his life with him. Music is an amazing part of life. -Steph-
You lost me at IPod....still haven't grasped that concept....I still have vinyl, cassettes, and now cd's (yeah...I love music too...and my vinyl collection would probably bemuse many a folk.....), but technology then left me in the dust. Amazingly awesome collection....What a wonderful gift for him to have a hobby....and one he can share with others. I so wish mine had a hobby. (Or do I??? I'm not really much into sharing my limited space if you know what I mean....) ;o) Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin
